Young Black Bear Tranquilized and Relocated – The MoCo Show –

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) safely tranquilized and relocated a young male black bear from a tree in Langley Park (though the agency referred to the area as Silver Spring) on Memorial Day, after tracking its movement through Baltimore and Howard counties, and fitted it with a collar as part of a population study.
According to The Maryland DNR, “On Memorial Day, DNR’s Wildlife and Heritage Service successfully removed this 1.5-year-old male black bear from a Silver Spring area tree and moved it to a new home. The bear was likely dispersing – leaving where it was born in search of a new area to live. DNR monitored reports of this bear for a few weeks, starting in Baltimore County through Howard County. On Monday. the bear made its way into a populated area of Langley Park and went up a tree, drawing a large crowd. The bear was first sedated by a dart fired by DNR staff, and then after slowly working its way down the tree, once on the ground and sedated, staff retrieved it for tagging and relocation. A collar was also fitted onto the bear and it is now part of a larger population study being conducted in cooperation with the University of Maryland. He now lives in a more suitable green space nearby!”
