100 people vs. one gorilla? Celtics players weigh in on the internet’s strangest question – The Patriot Ledger

With the intensity of the NBA playoffs ramping up, a little levity goes a long way—and nothing says mental break like a wildly silly TikTok debate. The latest? Who would win: 100 NBA players or one gorilla?
The Boston Celtics’ social media team leaned into the fun, posting a video of three of the team’s star players weighing in on the bizarre hypothetical—an offshoot of the viral “100 men vs. 1 gorilla” debate that even celebrities like MrBeast have chimed in on.
Here’s what a few of Boston’s 18-banner champions had to say about the man-vs-ape matchup—and how surprisingly seriously they took it.
Celtics small forward Jayson Tatum seemed to consider the question and then chose the gorilla.
His Latvian teammate had much more to say.
Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis said that he has a very strong opinion about this.
“About 20 average humans would put up a good fight and possibly beat one gorilla” Porzingis said.
Porzingis said that he watched mixed-martial arts experts breaking down this hypothetical battle.
“This is what everybody thinks, ‘Oh gorilla will grab you and crush your skull,'” Porzingis said. “We just sacrifice five guys to get on the gorilla and poke the eyes, you know?”
Celtics point guard Derrick White chose 100 NBA players over the gorilla.
“But I’m not part of the hundred,” White said, walking away.
Tara Stoinski, president and chief scientific officer of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, told USA TODAY in an interview on April 30 that “the numbers game really works in favor of the people.”
“[I think] in terms of kind of being able to prolong a battle that could eventually wear a gorilla out, and our, you know, our ability to really cooperate and coordinate, I think those two elements kind of work against a gorilla’s favor,” Stoinski said.
