When the Giant Center first opened, it wasn't just the new home for the Hershey Bears — it also became home to thousands of hockey fans.
As CBS 21 celebrates its 70th birthday this year, we're diving into our archives each week to share some of our favorite stories from over the years.
This week, travel back in time to October of 2002, when CBS 21's own chief meteorologist Tom Russell gave a behind-the-scenes tour of the new and yet-to-be-opened Giant Center.
"Not only do the Hershey Bears have a new home, but they also have a new look," Russel says while wearing a foam bear paw, pointing to a foam hat in the shape of a hockey puck. "Check out the new logo. You know how Green Bay has their cheese heads? Hershey has the puck heads."
Viewers can see the center's newly completed infrastructure, food court options, drink selections and giftshop.
Many hoped the Giant Center, touted as Central Pennsylvania's first state-of-the-art arena, would bring bigger names and events to the area — eventually, the arena did just that.
That year, Cher was scheduled to perform at the center's grand-opening. Since, the Giant Center has attracted many big names, including presidential rallied from Donald Trump and John McCain.
