The question was first posed on TikTok: in a fight between one gorilla and 100 men – who would emerge victorious?
Social media users have been divided about who would win a hypothetical physical contest between one gorilla and 100 men – with the premise that the ape takes on each human one at a time rather than all together.
First we get into the arguments and opinions, let’s consider the physical differences between humans and gorillas. Gorillas are the largest living primates and reach adulthood at 12 years of age. A fully-grown, adult male gorilla in the wild, weighs on average, somewhere between 140 to 200 kg. Adult female gorillas meanwhile will weigh from 70 to 115 kg.

Apart from weighing more than men, adults male gorillas are taller and physically imposing – their height ranges from 1.5 to 1.8 meters when standing upright. They also possess a huge arm span of up to 2.6 meters.
So in terms of physical size, brawn and muscular power, the gorilla wins hands down against one man – but what about if it had to wrestle another 99?
Dr. Tara Stoinski, president and CEO and chief scientific officer for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, has has studied gorillas for more than three decades and believes that even if the men were to win – a large proportion of them wouldn’t survive.
Stoinski points out that gorillas are naturally relaxed animals – “gentle giants” in a way. They are family-oriented in nature and would fight back to defend their family, territory or if threatened or cornered.

Experts agree that one gorilla is much, much stronger than one man, but in terms of sheer numbers the gorilla would be at a disadvantage. Also humans’ capability to develop strategies, coordinate and multitask would be another factor in their favor.
The gorilla would also get tired quicker against an army of men, as it just wouldn’t have the stamina to continue fighting although it wouldn’t have any problems seeing off the first few waves of combatants.

Ron Magill,a wildlife photographer and conservationist gave his thoughts on the matter, saying that in his view, 100 men in their twenties and in excellent physical condition could ultimately defeat a gorilla if they “are committed and go in united.”
But it would be a very ugly battle with a lot of casualties. The humans “would have to expect severe collateral damage that could easily include death from broken necks, severe arterial bite wounds, massive concussions leading to fatal brain bleeds, and asphyxiation from other men piling on top of them,” he concluded.
