Hope to Spot a Maine Black Bear? You May Find One in This Location – Q106.5

Maine is known for incredible scenery and natural beauty, but another thing that can be a spectacular sight is Maine wildlife.
Spotting a massive moose or a herd of deer can be very exciting.
Another animal with a large presence in certain parts of the state is the black bear, and spotting one can be just as thrilling.
Sometimes, an unexpected encounter with a black bear can be frightening, depending on the circumstances.
Experts say black bears are not inherently aggressive toward humans and are even considered shy and wary of people, but they are wild animals, so you never know what could happen.
That being said, it's best to respect a bear's personal space and observe from a safe distance.

If catching a glimpse of a Maine black bear sounds appealing, there are parts of the state where you can go to potentially see one.
Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is located in Washington County and consists of two separate divisions, the Baring Division and the Edmunds Division.
The Baring Division covers more than 20,000 acres and is located southwest of Calais.
The Edmunds Division covers about 8,600 acres and is located along U.S. Route 1 between Dennysville and Whiting.
Both divisions of the refuge feature hiking trails and a scenic driving loop.
Refuge headquarters, which provides maps and useful information, is located in the Baring Division.
Black bears are listed among "frequently sighted wildlife" at the refuge.
"Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge provides nesting, feeding and breeding habitats for many different species, from tiny golden crowned kinglets to black bears and bobcats," the refuge says.
Dawn and dusk are said to be the best times to see wildlife in the refuge.
Another recommendation, observe from the sidelines. Pick a good spot, sit quietly, and use a pair of binoculars or a long lens for a closer look.
Of course, is just one area where you may find a black bear in Maine.
The Allagash Wilderness Waterway, Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument are also recommended if you hope to spot one.
But if you are in Downeast Maine, the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is a great place to look.
