KEARNEY – The Gothenburg girls won convincingly over McCook in the Southwest Conference Tournament semifinals 69-38 Friday night.

The Gothenburg defense only allowed nine points in the first half and two points in the second quarter. That strong defense allowed the offense to thrive, giving the Swedes a 29-9 advantage at the half. Gothenburg’s offense would explode in the third quarter, hitting seven three pointers and scoring 23 in the period. McCook’s offense would come to life in the second half, but the deficit would be too much and turnovers plagued the Bison.

Gothenburg used a balanced offensive attack as 11 different players scored and the Swedes hit 11 three pointers. Halsey Thomalla led the team with 16 points and hit three triples. Zoe Beveridge scored 15 points on three from beyond the arc and Alex Beveridge added 13 points. Gothenburg would turn the ball over 17 times. McCook was led by Paige Bortner’s 15 points. The Bison finished with 24 turnovers.

With the win, Gothenburg improved to 14-1 while McCook fell to 12-6.
