The debate tapped into the public’s love for absurd “man vs. animal” hypotheticals, much like the famous “horse-sized duck vs. duck-sized horses” question from years before.
Primatologists quickly weighed in, shutting down the idea that a gorilla would ever engage 100 humans in battle. Michael Stern, former Curator of Primates at the Philadelphia Zoo, explained, “A gorilla would take off and sprint through the nearest line of men to escape.”
Tara Stoinski, president of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, added that gorillas are known as “gentle giants” and only show aggression when protecting their families. She stressed that gorillas prefer flight over fight when overwhelmed.
Experts also pointed out that while gorillas are incredibly strong—up to 10 times stronger than a human—they aren’t built for long battles. Their stamina is limited to short bursts, making sustained combat unlikely.

Some fans, like @Stallweat, boldly claimed that “human stamina would prevail,” while others criticized the debate as unrealistic or even a reflection of toxic masculinity.
Though experts say it’s unlikely, they did speculate on outcomes if a fight occurred. Ron Magill of Zoo Miami suggested 100 well-trained men could win by overwhelming the gorilla, but not without suffering serious injuries.
Cat Hobaiter noted that if humans attacked one by one, “100 guys wouldn’t stand a chance,” emphasizing the gorilla’s powerful swipes. The Environmental Literacy Council also highlighted that a gorilla’s bite and muscle density make it a fearsome opponent. Overall, experts agree that even in a forced scenario, the fight would be brutal and ethically wrong, especially given that gorillas are critically endangered.
The debate also sparked important conversations about gorilla conservation. Tara Stoinski and others reminded fans that only about 1,000 mountain gorillas remain in the wild, facing threats from habitat loss and poaching.
