Plenty of bizarre and breaking news comes out of Florida, but a terrifying animal encounter has even long-time residents on edge. No, it's not the Florida alligators or even a coastal animal causing trouble—it's a black bear and her cub.
In the early morning hours of May 15, local 911 dispatchers received a distressing call from a dog dad who was bitten by a black bear in his backyard. He had just returned home from work and let his dog outside to use the bathroom in the fenced yard, but when he heard yelping, he ran back outside to come nose-to-nose with the huge predator.
The 911 call was released to the public only hours later, after the man was taken to the hospital.
(A heads up: The very beginning of the video contains flashing lights.)
This sounds so scary! It's hard to imagine what it would even be like to be so close to a huge bear, but this poor dog dad probably didn't even have time to process the situation before the bear attacked. Fortunately, he was able to get back inside and call for help.
Although news outlets have not provided an update on the man or his pet dog's condition, the man mentioned in his 911 call that they went back inside the house. Both have survived the terrifying bear encounter, but sadly, the bear may not.

Despite being local to the area and being spotted with her cub in neighbors' security camera footage, the officials' plan for the mama bear is humane euthanasia. Naturally, are outraged.
"That bear should be caught with her cub and relocated, not euthanized!" a commenter named Tracy wrote. "She wasn't doing anything abnormal and didn't attack the man for food. She was protecting her cub, and that's not a euthanasia-worthy offense."
I couldn't agree more! Bears naturally forage in urban areas when their own homes have been destroyed, and it's instinct for a mom to protect her baby. These bears haven't acted out of aggression, but the state's first fatal black bear attack has people on edge.
So far, the mama bear and her cub have not been caught, and there's a chance they never will be. Let's hope everyone can fully recover from this scary situation!
