Forget the Kentucky Derby. On May 4, don your best hatand get into the Goat Derby at Winery at Wolf Creek in Norton.Winery at Wolf Creek
NORTON, Ohio – If you don’t have tickets to the 150th running of Kentucky Derby on May 4, wear your best derby hat and drink mint juleps at the 11th Goat Derby at Winery at Wolf Creek. Tickets become available April 1.
The winery will “race” 3 to 4 goats in three separate races. The goal is to raise both fun and funds. Races will be staggered throughout the day and guests can donate “bets” in the name of their favorite goat. Money raised benefits four animal charities including Paws & Prayers, One of a Kind Pet Rescue, Humane Society of Summit County, and Maggie’s Mission.
“We started doing this almost as a joke between me and the kids on Derby Day,” says winery owner Andy Troutman. “I got the goats out of the barn one year and ran them up the hill with about a dozen onlookers. It’s grown into quite an annual celebration of all things Derby and supports some great charities in the process.”
Derby-themed cocktails will include mint juleps, Kentucky mules and Derby peach cocktails. The Bourbon Bar may return as well. Wine and beer will be available.
Food trucks will fuel the crowd. This year’s fleet includes Vuj’s Hotdog Cart, Scott’s Fire & Ice Pizza, Cousin’s Maine Lobster, and Mel’s Mobile Diner.
The day will include Kentucky Derby-inspired contests for the Best Dressed and the Best Hat.
Derby fashion, including hats and ties, are serious tradition. Like historic French and English derbies, Kentucky Derby attendees originally showed off the latest fashion including hats. The tradition continues today, albeit it elegant, playful or eccentric, at Churchill Downs and even at home viewing parties.
If previous years are any indication, the hat competition at the Goat Derby will be serious, too. Each winner receives a trophy and quality time with the winning goat.
General admission tickets are free. Goat Derby VIP access tickets, $125, are also available; they include red-carpet entry into the Great Room for a private, race-viewing area, a private bar, restrooms, and catered food.
